Story behind Amma Sanctuary:

Amma Sanctuary began with a childhood dream of Nandhi. As a child Nandhi was pained to see truck loads after truck loads of terrified cows, oxen and buffaloes all crammed together and taken to the slaughterhouse.  Around Sivakasi (Nandhi’s home town) and the surrounding areas were vast areas of waste thorn lands not fit for the purpose of agriculture or forestry and Nandhi would dream that one day, he would have make a huge farm out of this vast expanse of land. He dreamt that if 50% of the agricultural produce of this vast farm was given to feed the poor, it could sustain so many people. This dream would often make Nandhi restless and ambitious to implement although he was still a child because it all felt so easily accomplished with common sense.

Years later, as a yogi on pilgrimages, Nandhi’s childhood dream was woken up as blessings from enlightened yogis received through the ancient words “Saivam Vetri”. It was during this period, that Mata Amritandamayi, the revered hugging saint, known to all as Amma, honoured Nandhi’s parent’s home with Her auspicious presence. When Nandhi told Amma of the deep desire to start this animal sanctuary, Amma smiled and told him, “Amma is with you. Just do it, son of Siva”. These words were powerful. They inspired Nandhi to bring into focus the reality of his childhood dream.

Years later, Nandhi settled in Santa Monica, California with Amma’s divine presence guiding him. With Amma’s energy of love, fearlessness and purpose, Nandhi was able to create the foundations of the animal sanctuary. Nandhi met Amma in Los Angeles and told Amma about the unfolding exciting reality. Nandhi requested Amma if he could utilize Her name since it was She who was the driving force behind this endeavour. Amma said, “Son, of course! What you are doing is wonderful”.  These words for Nandhi meant an assurance that it is Amma enabling this grand project of humanity with Her supreme love, compassion and abundance for all on planet earth through Amma Sanctuary, the debut project of Ariven Community.

Today, Amma Sanctuary emerges as just what a Mother is- a home for thousands of old animals saved from slaughter and cared for with love while enabling a giant organic farm that feeds 50% of its vegetarian produce to the poor and needy while the other half sustains a global vegetarian diet.
